description
Presented in 1931, the Astura was one of the great Italian cars of the Thirties.
The Astura was born out of the Dilambda, a luxurious 4 liter V8 introduced in 1929 and aimed at the US market for luxury cars. In 1931 Lancia approved of the design and building of two new cars which were very similar but with different engines. The Artena was a V4 engined car just below 2 liters and the Astura was a 2.6 liter V8.
The Astura had a box section chassis, independent front suspension and it was so attractive that it became one of the chassis of choice for all the various Italian coachbuilders of the time.
This one-off torpedo is unique, the only Castagna bodied version in double phaeton style. It is a Series II car but with a series III engine.
It was exhibited at the 1933 Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance where it won the most coveted award, the Coppa d’Oro Referendum.
Mr. Ettore Castagna had a big show room in New York (together with Isotta Fraschini) managed by the engineer Veniero D'Annunzio, son of the great italian poet. Mr D'Annunzio managed to sell the extraordinary automobile to the famous, well known tobacco heiress from New Jersey, Doris Duke. Many wealthy and prestigious owners followed.
